One Year Ago: Democrats Passed Legislation to Protect Nevadans and Out of State Women Traveling for Reproductive Care
One year ago, Democrats passed legislation that codified former Governor Sisolak’s executive order to protect health care providers and out-of-state patients seeking reproductive healthcare against legislation in neighboring states criminalizing travel across state lines for abortion access. Democrats also passed a series of bills that expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage from 90 days to 1 year, ensured patients’ right to long-acting reversible contraception care, and required health insurance plans to cover breast cancer screening without requiring any out-of-pocket costs for patients. During the last legislative session, every single GOP legislator voted against enshrining the right to infertility care and reproductive freedom into Nevada’s Constitution The NDRC selected their endorsements based on their commitment to defending democracy, ending gerrymandering, and ensuring equal representation for all. Local and State legislators are on the forefront of GOP plans to undermine the democratic electoral process and disrupt our right to vote in a fair and free election.
Joint Statement From the Nevada Democratic Senate and Assembly Caucuses:
“This time last year, Democrats in the state legislature took action to protect reproductive freedom by passing legislation that protected out-of-state patients seeking abortion care in Nevada and their providers. With our first-of-its-kind women-majority legislature, we passed legislation that prioritized and protected women. The Nevada Democratic Senate and Assembly Caucuses are in lockstep in our mission to expand access to reproductive health care, lower the cost of prescription drugs, and protect our fundamental rights.”
Senate Bill 131, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, Senator Roberta Lange, Senator Melanie Scheible, Senator Rochelle Nguyen, Senator Pat Spearman codifies former Governor Sisolak’s executive order to protect Nevada health care providers and out-of-state patients seeking reproductive healthcare in Nevada.
“I am proud of the work done this last legislative session to ensure women have access to reproductive healthcare and allow them to make their own choices when it comes to healthcare decisions. Likewise, we must do everything we can to protect our healthcare providers here in Nevada so we can continue to access reproductive care,” said Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro. “Senate Bill 131 ensures women can access care here and our healthcare providers are free from overreaching laws passed by extremists in other states seeking to prosecute women for simply making their own healthcare decisions.”
Senate Bill 280, sponsored by Senator Rochelle Nguyen (D-3) requires hospitals to provide long-acting, reversible contraception to a patient giving birth if the patient requests.
“Long-acting, reversible, contraception is a proven way for women to make decisions that are best for them and their families. said Senator Rochelle Nguyen. “While reproductive health care is under attack from MAGA extremists across the country and in our own backyard, I will continue to stand up for all Nevadans and defend their right to bodily autonomy.”
Senate Bill 330, sponsored by Senator Roberta Lange (D-7) requires health insurance plans to cover breast cancer screening without requiring any out-of-pocket costs for patients.
“Across the country, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,” said Senator Roberta Lange. “By forcing insurers to cover breast cancer screenings, without out-of-pocket costs, legislative Democrats are helping to bring down disparities in our broken health care system and make cost less of a barrier. I am proud to have worked with my colleagues to pass this legislation and ensure more women have access to lifesaving care.”
Senate Bill 232, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, Senator Melanie Scheible, Senator Edgar Flores, Senator Roberta Lange, Senator Fabian Doñate, Assemblywoman Michelle Gorelow expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage from 90 days to 1 year.
