One Year Ago: Democrats Passed Legislation to Lower Housing Costs for Nevadans

One year ago, Democrats passed legislation to lower housing costs for Nevada residents and put Nevada families first. Democrats passed game-changing legislation that prohibits landlords from charging fees to make repairs that keep a rental home habitable, provided an appropriation for rental assistance to protect tenants from eviction, allowed the Housing Division to allocate funds for housing for women veterans, and created the Nevada Supportive Housing Development Fund to allow for the construction of affordable housing. While Republicans refuse to put forward a serious plan to address skyrocketing housing costs, legislative Democrats are laser-focused on expanding access to affordable housing, lowering costs for Nevadans, and making our communities safe.

Joint Statement From the Nevada Democratic Senate and Assembly Caucuses:

“Last year, Democrats passed legislation to lower housing costs and provide relief for Nevada residents during the ongoing housing crisis. While Joe Lombardo and Republicans obstructed efforts to lower housing costs, Democrats put people over profits and kept Nevadans in their homes.”

Assembly Bill 396, sponsored by the Assembly Committee on Ways and Means, provides an appropriation for rental assistance to protect tenants from eviction.

“Democrats delivered when we passed AB396 that put people over profits and kept Nevadans in their homes,” said Daniele Monroe-Moreno Assembly Committee on Ways and Means Chair. “Democrats in the legislature worked to build upon the $1 billion President Biden provided for affordable housing in Nevada and made sure hardworking Nevada families would keep roofs over their heads.”

Senate Bill 381, sponsored by Senator Dallas Harris, Senator Fabian Doñate, Senator Pat Spearman, and Senator Edgar Flores prohibits landlords from charging fees to make repairs that keep a rental home habitable.

“Senate Bill 381 ensures that landlords cannot exploit tenants by charging unnecessary fees for essential repairs. This legislation is a significant step towards fairness and equity in housing for all Nevadans,” said Senator Dallas Harris. “I am proud to have championed a bill that prioritizes the well-being and rights of our residents.”

Senate Bill 363, sponsored by Senator Pat Spearman and Senator Skip Daly allowed the Housing Division to allocate funds for housing for women veterans.
