One Year Ago: Democrats Prioritized Community Safety

During the 2023 legislative session, Democrats took action to pass legislation to protect Nevada’s most vulnerable populations including senior citizens who are often left defenseless against deceptive trade practices and fraud. Democrats also passed bills that enhanced criminal penalties for assault and battery against healthcare providers. In recent years, threats to healthcare workers have increased and Democrats are laser-focused on protecting Nevada’s most vulnerable populations including protecting our frontline workers, seniors, and communities.

Joint Statement From the Nevada Democratic Senate and Assembly Caucuses:

“One year ago, Nevada Democrats passed critical legislation to keep our communities and health care workers safe. With threats against Nevada’s most vulnerable populations rising, Democrats are laser-focused on keeping our communities safe including our health care workers, seniors, and our neighbors. ”

Assembly Bill 373, sponsored by Assemblywoman Michelle Gorelow and Assemblyman Duy Nguyen, increased the civil and criminal penalties for engaging in a deceptive trade practice directed toward an elderly person.

“Assembly Bill 373 is not just about individual security; it’s about fostering a community where trust and security prevail,” said Assemblyman Duy Nguyen. “As we fortify legal measures to combat fraud, we uphold the dignity and well-being of our aging population. This bill’s ripple effect extends beyond immediate legal ramifications, benefiting all residents who seek a safer, more equitable Nevada and reinforcing our collective responsibility towards our community.

Senate Bill 289, sponsored by Senator Rochelle Nguyen, expanded enhanced penalties for assault and battery to include health care providers.

Senate Bill 389, sponsored by Senator Melanie Scheible, cracks down on sex traffickers and expands rights to survivors.
